Back in 2019, I had my soul crushed by the corporate world which left me burnt out, depressed, and completely unsure of my life. While standing on the summit of a mountain, an epiphany struck me like lightening and it told me that traveling the world was going to be the next chapter of my life.
I believed that if I bought a one-way plane ticket and traveled around the world that I would "find myself" and return to become the person I was meant to be. Travel was going to solve all my problems.
Six months of preparation later, off I went. Besides dealing with a global pandemic alone and abroad for the first half of the trip, I still managed to have the time of my life.
After 10-months abroad, I returned home for Christmas and I struggled - hard. It was one of the most difficult and most uncomfortable moments of my life.
Not only was I was having a hard time navigating reverse culture shock, but I had gone through this experience that I had no way of explaining to anyone and I wasn't any closer to knowing what the next step in my life was supposed to be. I didn't feel like I had quite figured it out.
I thought that was supposed to be the trick. Go on the trip and reap the rewards. But I left with no direction and I returned with even less.
Luckily, I was only 24 at the time, had no responsibilities, a retirement savings account with enough money to last me another year, and nothing to lose.
So I left again. A second year would surely do it, right?
By the end of the second year I had run out of money and still didn't know what I was supposed to do with my life.
So I started picking up small online jobs and ended up stumbling into the travel industry thanks to my experience on the road full time for two years.
Later, I founded my company after an inspiring family hired me to help them prepare for their departure and to manage the logistics for their one-year trip. It matched my skill set and I definitely had knowledge to share. But they fired me after four months because I wasn't able to help them any more than they could help themselves.
Time went on and I continued to travel, completely immersed in the world of long-term international travel. I was meeting more long-term travelers along the way and more people were hiring me to plan their trips.
I got better and better at planning travel but something was still missing. Some clients were definitely changing throughout their trips, but some more than others. I was definitely changing throughout these years too. But frankly, it didn't feel like it was on purpose.
So in 2024 I was burning myself out all over again with unaligned clients and a vision for my company that was simply not where I wanted it to be. When I had the opportunity to take another career break, I jumped at it. I stepped back into my company after two months off. That time was everything I needed to rethink the purpose of my company and put new perspective on what I was actually trying to accomplish with it. That's when things started to click.
By that time, I knew the power of travel. I could feel it, I could see it, and I heard about it from all my traveler friends. So I started paying attention to the patterns.
Another year and another couple of clients came and successfully went before it really clicked.
It wasn't until I had five years of travel and multiple long-term clients before I had finally cracked the code.
A plane ticket gets you somewhere new. That’s it. The rest depends on how you design the trip, the kind of adventures you go on, and the intentions you carry into it all.
Travel is transformational and some people stumble into the right ways, but it's not just because we're taking them and you have to be very lucky to stumble into the right mix of very specific kinds of activities that rewired us, and each in their own way.
I wrote this book because I don't want you to have to spend five years figuring it out. You only have a few months to get it right before you have to be back in your "regular life" with your fun had and your sh*t figured out. I have the code now, and I want to share it with you.
So, will this book work for you?
If you’re a successful, responsible adult, with commitments and a life path you can't just walk away from – but you still crave an adventure that's going to give you the rest, fun, and growth that you need for the next phase of your life – then yes. This book will work for you.
